A day of firsts...

A rare post from the ol' man - seeing as poor Krista had to work numerous hours over the weekend staring at a computer screen, Coops has stepped up to inform the masses (well okay, the half dozen or so, of you) of the firsts we experienced today;

1) Annie stood for more then two seconds unaided - we might get above three seconds by the end of next week.

2) Annie experienced her first real snow (as I type it is still snowing and we are very grateful to her Grandma and Grandpa for looking after her tomorrow whilst her school is shut for a snow day).  See evidence of enjoyment and preview of our Christmas card below.

3) Annie [sort of] enjoyed her first Sunday roast cooked by yours truly (all be it pureed).

I could also include the "first time Dad decided it would be a good idea to take the family for a walk to the park to enjoy the snow" but I am sure Annie, Sadie and Krista would prefer to forget the freezing temperatures and blustery northerly winds in their faces so I'll skip that.

Here comes Santa Claus!

We took Annie to meet Santa Claus last weekend at the clubhouse in my parents' fancy schmancy neighborhood.  We had a great time watching all the other kids coming up the stairs, smiling at Santa on their way to the room with cookies and animal crackers, waiting in line, and having complete meltdowns when they approached Santa to sit on his lap.  Complete meltdowns.

So it was pretty funny to watch, except that all the crying finally started to unsettle Annie, and it was also like having a window into the future.  Besides, Annie has not been particularly thrilled about being held by strangers lately, so we started to get more and more nervous the longer we waited.

Things started out pretty well.  We hadn't tried to dress her up in frilly clothes or make her wear the (super cute) bows or santa hat that Grandma brought along.  The following is a recitation of what I believe Annie was thinking throughout the morning.

Annie:  This is pretty cool.  Grandma and Grandpa are here, and Grandpa seems very excited by those little crackers shaped like animals.  It is a beautiful day and there are lots of big kids to watch. I wonder why Mommy looks worried?

Annie:  Okay, what exactly is going on here?  The big kids are screaming like this is the flu shot clinic.  Am I about to get a shot?  I was told I wouldn't need any more shots until my 12 month visit to the doctor.

Annie:  You may be walking me backwards over to the big crazy man, but I know whats going on.  Just because I can't see him doesn't mean I can't tell that he's back there. And why did Daddy take my socks off?  It's December, and even if it is 70 degrees, it is supposed to at least LOOK cold.

Annie:  Grumps, what are you doing here?!  I thought you were still in England!  What, you're not my Grumps? Well you look like him, so you must not be too bad.

So we hightailed it out of there with nary a tear shed. (And doesn't Annie look cute in the sweater I wore when I was a baby?)  Victory!

Recent photo roundup

I forgot to post the pictures we took of Annie on her 8 month birthday - so here they are, plus a few recent bonus pictures.

Annie and Daddy horsing around, as always...

Note that Toby dressed Annie for her 8 month birthday.  Yes, that's a Metallica top.

Last weekend we enjoyed what will surely be one of our last warm, sunny days of 2010.

Snuggles in the early morning.  Annie has been getting up at 5:15 lately, and still isn't sleeping through the night, so we need extra love to make it through the day!

Being Thankful for...

1. Toby, even when he's out-parenting me.
2. Annie, even she's crying at 1 a.m
3. Our home, even when it's dirty.
4. Our jobs, even when we're working late.
5  The fact that we have access to more healthy food and clean water than we could ever consume, even when I'm still hanging on to extra "baby" weight.

We have it made in the shade, and are prone to forget how lucky we are to have a strong marriage, healthy baby, healthy bodies, and no unmet needs.  Feel free to remind me the next time I'm complaining about 1-5 above.

Eight Months!

Annie turned 8 months old on Tuesday and celebrated by getting her first tooth!  I'm actually a bit sad - her toothless smile is so precious, I don't want it to change!

We took a few snapshots, and I'll post them soon.  Our resident photographer is down with a really nasty bug, so it may be a few days.

Introducing Peyton!

Congratulations to Edie and Justin on their birth of their sweet baby boy!  Peyton arrived this morning, weighing in at 9 pounds, 6 ounces!

Nightly ritual at our house

You might not be able to see the baby food in her hair, in her eyebrows, on the highchair, on her hands - pretty much everywhere except in Annie's mouth.  I won't even see it all when I'm trying to get it off her.  But by tomorrow morning, it will be cement.

Happy 4th birthday to Hannah, Travis and Tristan!

We took Annie to Houston to celebrate the triplets' birthday last weekend.  It was really cute watching Hannah, Travis and Tristan trying to play with Annie - and trying to share their potato chips.  They got bored very quickly when they realized that Annie couldn't talk, follow simple instructions or chew.

Annie did very well on the flights.  Our flight down left at 6:00, conveniently close to her bedtime.  She was asleep by the time we reached 10,000 feet and didn't wake up until we were deplaning.  It was great!  She did, however, cry all the way from the airport to Bill's house.  We were just so thankful that she waited until we only had Mom and Dad as a captive audience, and not a whole plane full of people.  The return flight was a bit more challenging, she waited nearly an hour to fall asleep and was fairly wiggly.

Anyway, we had a great time in Houston.  I can't believe the triplets are FOUR years old!  We went to the aquarium and the park, and had a birthday party with Thomas the Train cupcakes.  Big fun.

Here's Travis at the park in his Halloween shirt.  He never slowed down, just ran ran ran!

Tristan slowed down for about five seconds, so Toby was able to get this cute shot.  Tristan was not to thrilled about the wobbly "bridge" at first, but was very proud when he went across on his own.

Hannah is such a beauty.  She was also very happy to chase other girls around making friends.  I would, too, if I had two brothers!

I love this photo of Bill and the boys.  Potty break!

Unbelievably, we managed to get them all in roughly the same area at once for a picture.

And again at home!  It should be clear that (1) none of the kids wanted to be in the picture, and (2) Annie and Travis kept the whole house up the night before...we look tired.   I bet it is rare to have a picture where half the subjects have their hands in their mouths.

A great time, indeed!

Happy Halloween!

I took the day off of work on Friday to get us ready for our trip to Houston (more on that later - it was a great trip and Annie behaved beautifully on the flights).  Since it was Friday, Annie's school was having Tot Shabbat, so I decided to check it out.  The kids (and Rabbis and musicians) were all dressed up for Halloween, which was a hoot.  I had already sent Annie's lion costume to Houston with Mom and Dad so that we would not have to lug it on the plane, so I put Annie in a ballerina "costume."  I had to put "costume" in quotation marks, because this is actually an outfit that I bought for her while I was on my first trip away from her and having serious withdrawal.  It really functions better as a cosutme than an everyday outfit, yet I will not be dissuaded from putting her in it on a random day soon - it is so cute!  Here she is with her friend Sammy Grace, who is dressed up like a pig.  (Insert inappropriate joke about dressing a child as a pig at Jewish school.)

Tot Shabbat was really fun, and I learned the Hebrew Hokey-Pokey and a great song that goes "Shabbat Shalom - HEY!"  over and over.  And the Rabbi was dressed up as Superman, so really, how could it be anything other than great fun?  He did a thirty-second lesson on peace, which was very nice, and then back to singing and dancing.  The kiddos loved it.

I'll post another photo of Annie in the ballerina costume soon - I have a great one where she is holding onto the bar in her classroom that faces a mirror.  She looks like a real baby ballerina.

PS - Toby obviously disapproves of the ballerina outfit, and sighs loudly whenever I put her in it. :)  He would prefer a baby rugby outfit, but I didn't find one in the ten minutes I devoted to searching online.  Sorry, Toby!

7 months!

Annie turned 7 months on Saturday, and it is utterly amazing how fast time flies.  She has come down with yet another cold (thank you, daycare friends) but we forged ahead with our weekend plans.  We spent some time at Gentry's Farm in Franklin on Saturday morning, which has a pumpkin patch, corn mazes, animals to watch and several hands-on activities for kiddos.  Annie enjoyed watching all the big kids run around.

We took lots of photos, but sweet Annie was not a smiley subject.  She definitely wasn't feeling great.

It probably didn't help that we stuck her right in the blazing sun...

Here she is after her first change of outfit...I really wanted to get a cute photo of her in her "peek-a-BOO" Halloween shirt.  As you can see, she wasn't all that excited about smiling for the camera.

Then I couldn't help but put her in her Halloween costume - she's a baby lion!  She was not interested.

In fact, I'm pretty sure she's begging for mercy in this photo...

Annie was a real trooper, despite the copious amount of snot streaming down her face. :)   Later that day we left her with a non-family baby sitter for the first time so that Toby and I could join my parents at a wine tasting that was going on in their neighborhood.  We had a great time, and didn't even call to check in on the baby once.  (I wanted to, just a little bit...)

Toby and I feel like we need a weekend to recover from our weekend.  Alas, it looks to be another very busy week at work.   Hopefully we'll have a happy and relatively snot-free baby by Friday.

Happy Birthday, Toby!

Happy 34th birthday to the icing on my cake.  I love you!

Advice from a Mom to her Daughter - by Jaime Morrison Curtis

I found this on babble.com today, and I love it. I especially love 2, 12 and 13, and I'm still working on 8, 14 and 15.

1 Be Generous.

With your time, your money, your heart. If, on my best day, there was a single lesson I could hope to impart to you, this would be it.

2 Root for other people.

We all tend to envy other people's successes. It's not intentional; somewhere in our DNA it seems to be programmed that for every success for someone else, there is one less success for us. For every book published, there is one less book we will publish; for every baby had, there is one less baby for us to have. Of course, that is illogical. Fight off those thoughts; there is an unlimited amount of potential for everyone in this universe. Championing others is kind, and even more, it's a display of optimism that will seep into you and color your view of this life.

3 You don't have to pretend you know something if you don't.

It's okay to just say, "I don't know." You can't know everything!

4 You are the wellspring of your own hope.

No one (besides your mother) will be more invested in your emotional well-being than they are in their own. Joy is not something gifted to you by other people; it's an outlook on the world that you have to cultivate independent of friends and lovers. Daughter, if I could give it to you, I would, a million times over, but the truth is that you are singularly responsible for your own happiness.

5 Live alone for a period of time.

I love living with you and your father; I also cherish the years I spent living alone. You shouldn't go from being someone's daughter to someone's wife to someone's mother without first being someone yourself. Living alone will allow you to discover who you are when no one is watching, what you need to get through a day, and ultimately that you are a capable, independent woman.

6 If you marry your first love you will miss out on the exquisite pain of a broken heart.

7 Talk to strangers.

Teaching you to fear strangers would be cynical. The generosity of unknown people will ease your burden on many occasions. Instead, I want you to learn to gauge people’s intentions by listening to your gut instincts and recognizing subtle cues. Confidence in this skill will allow you to avoid the aberrant persons you encounter and embrace something much more common — the kindness of strangers.

8 Be where you are.

Try not to think about where you need to go next or wherever you just came from. This is more difficult than it sounds, but work at it. It’s important for your head to be present in the place where your body is.

9 Unless you're playing a game, there’s no point in keeping score.

Running a tally of who gets what in life will only frustrate you and annoy everyone else. It serves no purpose; the way life’s benefits and hindrances are doled out will never make any sense.

10 Ensure that the “bad” things you do are the result of your own choices.

You are doubtlessly going to engage in some unhealthy, unwise or otherwise questionable behavior somewhere along the line; this is part of learning your limits and establishing your comfort zone. Please have enough self-awareness to at least make the choice to participate, rather than floating through life getting swept up in whatever trouble comes your way.

11 If you test people, they may fail.

Friendship, love, and family don’t hinge on any single success or failure; you would do yourself a disservice to administer litmus tests to things as labyrinthine as love and affection.

12 Acknowledge inequity.

Thomas Jefferson wrote in The Declaration of Independence "All men are created equal." Today, we interpret “men” to mean “people,” but at that time “men” was not intended to be inclusive of women, or even of men who were not white. Inequity existed 200 years ago, and it still exists today. Don't let anyone tell you that everyone gets a fair shot. Be sympathetic to the disadvantaged and work hard to include them.

13  Create a sense of family wherever you are.

Find people to love and love them unconditionally.

14 Try not to wait eagerly for people to finish their stories just so you can tell your own versions that more directly involve you.

15 Pursue more than just the things you are good at.

You will be told at a young age what your talents are. Enjoy the compliments, but don’t accept them at face value. You don’t want to walk a narrow path; attempt things you aren’t comfortable with and uncover skills or proclivities you didn’t know you possessed.

16 Everyone is a hypocrite.

Hypocrisy is not the blanket failure it’s made out to be; we all act in ways that conflict with the image we want to reflect or the values we want to embody. Try not to pigeonhole people with expectations; be forgiving of this inconsistency, both in yourself and in others.

17 You will get good at anything you practice.

Everything gets easier the more you do it, good or bad, so choose your habits wisely.

18  If you don't have the money to buy an extravagant gift for someone special, bake!

19 Discipline in your mind; extravagance in your heart.

20 It is possible to be both pretty and smart.

They don’t always go together, certainly, but one thing does not preclude the other. This goes for you and also for people you meet.

21 There’s a science to everything.

22 Every time you rescue someone else, you rescue yourself a little bit.

You will have occasion to save people: to throw a life preserver, to present an opportunity, to alter a destiny for the better. Seize these chances. Reflect your best, most giving characteristics. Rescue yourself from tedious inward focus: These are your opportunities, too.

23 The measure of your goodness is not the amount of love you receive.

It is the quality of the love you give to others. It takes a long time to learn this lesson, maybe more time than most of us have.

Look who's crawling now!

Annie is crawling in short spurts!

Warning: 90% of you will find this video underwhelming, and the other 10% are related to us.  But it has been a big weekend at our house, nonetheless!

PS  - Thanks to Queen for the soundtrack.

Four years!

Toby and I met four years ago today!  We had dinner at Dan McGuinness, like we do every year.  Only this year we spent more time feeding/entertaining/wrangling Annie than gazing into each others' eyes.  For every thing there is a season, right?  Highlights included introducing Annie to our favorite bartender from our Battlefield Drive days, who we hadn't seen a year, and discovering that Annie dramatically improved her peek-a-boo skills over the last several days.

Sweet Toby

Toby surprised me yesterday by bringing Annie to the airport to meet me after my first business trip away since Annie was born.  Needless to say, I cried...rather a lot, and in front of strangers, too.  The other folks in the waiting area probably thought I had been away for a month, not one night!

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

I let out a big breath and then realized...

I just went through one of those new scanners at the airport.  You know, the scanners where there is a screener in some room in the basement who is basically looking at a picture of you naked.  I tried to avoid  newfangled scanner by getting into the other line, all the while feeling very smug that I had noticed the separate lines, but something about me apparently looked suspicious enough that I was asked to move to the newfangled scanner line.  Was it my hot pink jacket standing out in a sea of black, or perhaps the breast pump in my bag?  (I know, way too much information.)

Anyway, after the screener took my picture, I let out a big breath and then realized that I had been holding in my stomach - wouldn't want the mystery person in the dark room to think I have a pot belly. :)

Then one day it just happened...

Annie slept through the night last night!  6:30 pm - 6:00 am!  Woo-hoo!  But where are the blaring trumpets and singing angels?   No matter - I danced to cheesy top 40 music all the way to work, which I suppose is sufficient celebration.  AAAHHH!

So miracles do happen, though sometimes they take six months and four days.  And I am fully aware that the mere fact that I am broadcasting this accomplishment means that she might not do it again for another six months and four days.  But today is a good day.

Annie's 6 month photos - too cute!

Remember when I said that I have the cutest baby ever?  I meant it.  On Tuesday we took Annie to Krista Lee Photography (had to give some business to somebody wish such a nice name, after all).  She got some amazing shots.  You can see some really cute ones at http://kristaleephotography.blogspot.com/  Just click on the link and scroll down past the cute engaged couple.  If 20 people leave comments, we get a free print, so feel free to gush about how cute she is!

No dollar sign on peace of mind

Today I started my new part-time schedule at work.  I have already learned that traffic at 7:30 is worse than traffic at 9:00 - but then again I should have known that.  Other than that, I'm excited to see how this 8-2:30 schedule works out.  I'm looking forward to afternoons with Annie, time for exercise, time for cooking dinner, family walks and the whole she-bang that I've been missing out on lately.

I had some panicked moments on Friday when I was signing the agreement with my firm, and today when I saw the fully executed document on my desk I had another moment when I felt fairly paralyzed with fear.  A 25% reduction in pay + insanely expensive daycare = pretty much the amount that we've been putting into savings for the last couple of years.  So a new day is upon us financially, too.   Listening to the Zac Brown band on the way in to work resonated this morning.  In the middle of a fairly cheesy song about fried chicken (I kid you not) that takes a really bad turn at an attempt to be patriotic (in the middle of a song about fried chicken - good luck not sounding pithy) there are a good couple of pretty good lines:

And its funny how its the little things in life that mean the most
Not where you live, what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes
There's no dollar sign on peace of mind, this I've come to know

Then it goes on about fried chicken again.  Inexplicably, I really like the song.

Anyway, a new day is upon us, and I'm really excited!  Wish us luck!

Dear Franklin Police Department,

Yes, I voluntarily signed up for your automated text alerts during the flood of 2010.  Yes, I appreciate the texted Amber Alerts, warnings of flash floods and occassional requests to see if I can help identify a thief who used a stolen card at an ATM.

I do not appreciate texts sent at 3:30 am to advise me of overturned tractor trailers on the interstate.  Maybe I'm a little touchy since I have had only one full night of sleep since March 14th, but you seriously need to reevaluate what constitutes a necessary alert.  SERIOUSLY.

I thought...

...that commando crawling across the nursery floor to retrieve the pacifiers that Annie threw out of the crib, and then silently squeezing the pacifiers back through the bars so that they would magically be available when Annie needs them upon waking in the middle of the night would be the most ridiculous thing I did today.

Then I just looked down and noticed that I'm drinking wine from a coffee mug.  Tie?

At least I'm still standing.  Toby went to bed at 7:30.

Jogging

I renewed my attempts at jogging today and officially logged 1.3 miles while pushing a baby.  Not sure why I feel like I ran 10.

Toby is off to a great start on his marathon training!  He is going to run the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis this December.  We're both very happy to be getting back into a real exercise program after taking nearly 6 months off for the baby.  Okay, I took more like 13 months off.  But we're back!

Wish us luck!

The verdict

Annie really likes broccoli.  What an extraordinary child.

Saturday, August 21, 2010

Well, at least she has a pretty face...

Last week marked Annie's first week of "school" and I am happy to report that she did great!  The whole daycare (or "Children's Academy" as they like to be called) is brand new, so all the babies were new to the daycare experience and none of the teachers knew any of the students at the outset.    Annie started out the week refusing to eat or sleep much, but by Friday she was taking all her bottles and napping well.  She also apparently went to her first religious service yesterday - I wonder what they say at "Tot Shabbat."   Yes, Annie attends a Jewish daycare, where she will be learning Spanish and Hebrew, and we can't send ham sandwiches for lunch.

Anyway, last night we got a sort of re-cap email from Annie's teacher, telling all the parents about the first week of school.  The email itself has taught me a lot about what non-family caretakers should say and should not say about kids.  For example, just sending an email describing all the babies is bound to cause unnecessary comparisons, and in Type-A people like myself, unnecessary competition.

The email, which has been redacted for names and edited for length:

... Your babies are all AMAZING!....

...[Baby A] is our "Queen Bee."  She amazes me every day with her spirit and energy. Today at our first Shabbat, Baby A was moving to the music, dancing all over the place.  She could not keep her little body still. She was so happy.

[Baby B] is our "little princess."  Such a big personality for such a small baby.  Her face lights up a room.  Baby B loves everyone, she smiles at you when you talk to her.  Baby B enjoyed Shabbat also.

[Baby C] is like a baby doll.  I figured out that she too loves music but reacts in a different way.  It calms her downs, so much that it puts her to sleep.  She spends a lot of time watching everything around her and taking it all in with her gentle smile.

Annie is our "Gerber baby," those eyes are wonderful.  Annie is very patient and quiet.  She loves to cuddle and likes to play tug of war with a burp cloth.

That's right, the other babies are leaders, dancers and musicians.  Our baby likes to play with spit rags.

Five months!

Monday is Annie's five-month birthday!  We celebrated today by taking her to the park at 7:30 am (it was already getting hot) and trying out the baby swings.  She looked so little bitty in there!

I think she had fun, if this smile is at all indicative!

She held on tight to the sides!

She's finally starting to look a little bit like me, and not just like a clone of Toby.  Though, truth be told, she's cuter than both of us put together.

Don't worry, I stood about 3 inches behind her, at most, the whole time.  I think she's another month or two from being out of the dangeous I-could-fall-through-the-holes stage.

She also enjoyed joining Daddy for a while on the big-kid swings.

She is just too cute for words.  She's about 15 pounds and starting solids.  She loooooves squash and sweet potatoes, and looks like she's being poisoned when we give her peas and green beans.  We are not deterred on the green vegetable front.  Soon we'll be on to broccoli and avocado!  I may give her a pass on the brussle sprouts, though. :)

Musings

1.  A friend told me about this shop today, and I am so upset that I didn't think of the idea first.  http://www.rufflebutts.com/  Ruffle butts are my favorite feature of little girl clothes.

2.  Good luck to Tracey this weekend - she is competing in her first triathalon of the fall season.  Kick butt, girlfriend!

3.  Toby started back to work this week, and we've had a bit of a transition period with both of us working and still trying to keep the household running.  Thank goodness my parents have been keeping Annie!  She absolutely adores them, and I'm pretty sure they feel the same.  Next week - daycare!

Best diaper and wipes deal ever!

I am a little too excited about the deal I just got on diapers and wipes. Amazon.com has a "subscribe and save" feature where they send you diapers and wipes (and lots of other stuff) in whatever quantities and on whatever monthly schedule you want. So, for example, we've signed up for 3 cases of wipes every three months and 2 cases of diapers every month. If you sign up now, you get 30% off plus free shipping for the whole time you keep the subscription! Throw in the fact that their prices are cheaper to start with and you don't have to pay tax, and we're saving nearly 50% from the price we pay at Harris Teeter and BabiesRUs. Woo-Hoo!

Toby just gave me a bit of a condescending smile, but I'm taking that extra $75 a month and getting a massage. Double Woo-Hoo!

Not going to win the Mother-of-the-Year Award

I saw AnnaLeigh for about 1.5 waking hours today, and in that time managed to (1) notice that she clawed her face last night because I didn't cut her nails (2) make her scream by sticking my head out from behind the shower curtain to kiss her goodbye, and (3) make her scream by running her arm into a doorframe.

*Sigh*

Try something different...

"Try something different" has been one of my mottos since Annie's arrival. Baby doesn't like the song you're singing? Try something different. Baby hates the bouncy seat she used to love? Try something different. I feed/clothe/bathe her one way, but her daddy, grandparents, friends, etc. are welcome to try something different.

Why on Earth did I forget all that when we were fighting to get her to sleep last week? Yesterday Toby and I finally remembered the motto, tried something different, and got some sleep. No, she didn't sleep through the night, but she did sleep from 7-2:30 and from 3-6. It felt like a huge victory! The changes? We fed her the dreaded f-word (formula) at 6:30 and we didn't wake her up to feed her again at 10, like we had been doing. Then we went to sleep at 9:30, fully expecting to be woken up at 11, 1, 3 and 5.

Instead, I woke up at 1:30 and was so happy/relieved/excited that I couldn't go back to sleep. I finally went to check on her at 2:30. Though I missed all the creaky spots on the floor, my ankle made a terrifically loud pop on my way out of her room, and I woke her up. Next time, I'll try harder not to check on her. :)

It is too early to say we turned the corner on our week of awful sleeping, but we feel so much better today knowing that it is possible to get some sleep on occassion. Wish us luck tonight.

Making me look bad...

Toby has been home with Annie for the last two weeks, and they have been having a great time together. Back when I was home, I was pretty proud at the end of the day that I had kept the baby alive and maybe emptied the dishwasher. Now, I get home at the end of the day and Toby has done all the laundry, kept the house straight, walked the dog, taken Annie for a hike, and today........

...sewed a felt hand puppet to go with her favorite song. "Five little speckled frogs, sitting upon a log, eating some most delicious bugs. One jumped into the pool, where it was nice and cool, now there are four speckled frogs..." etc etc. So he's also teaching her math.
He is seriously making me look bad.

Four Months!

AnnaLeigh turned 4 months old on Friday! She remains the cutest baby on the planet, as evidenced by this photo.

Seriously, she is the cutest baby ever.

Stats from her check-up:
Height - 25 inches - 75th percentile. (Tall!!! Hooray!)
Weight - 13 pounds, 15 ounces - 50th percentile
Excellence awards - she is a "very good sitter" and also rolled over on the exam table.

She had her shots, too, but Toby and I handled them better this time and Annie only screamed for about a minute. She did come down with a fever a few hours later, which I always thought was an old-wives tale but turns out to be an actual side effect, requiring a trip to Walgreens in the middle of a thunderstorm. (Thanks, Toby.)

She's been enjoying driving her car lately, a lovely hand-me-down from neighbors.

Yes, my worry-wart friends - it is a walker, and yes - we removed the wheels.

Tomorrow starts week 3 back to work. Things are going much better than I imagined, thanks mostly to Toby's excellent care.

You are so Nashville if...

I love the annual "You are so Nashville if..." contest that the Nashville Scene puts on every year.

http://www.nashvillescene.com/nashville/so-nashville-if-this-years-winner-the-contenders-a-yasni-wave-of-relief-the-weirdies/Content?oid=1656374

The link will take you to the winners and contenders. One day I'm going to actually sit down and think of something funny enough to submit. For now, however, I love this year's #2 winner - "[You are so Nashville if] FEMA bailed out your Tea Party a**."

Most of the time you have to be a hard-core Nashvillian to understand the entries, but we can all appreciate this one. (Okay, maybe not our British audience, but everybody else.)

I know I've said it before...

...but I'm pretty sure that if you took all the babies in the world and looked at them purely objectively, mine would be the cutest.

And not only is she cute, but she's very smart, too. She started sitting by herself today. True, she tripods on her hands, and if she leans any direction she falls, but I'm still pretty sure she's extra-smart. :)

Tara's 35th Birthday Party

The weather was extremely hot, Annie was super grouchy, and we had to leave after an hour. But Tara's friend Jimmy (www.jlegnonphotography.com) took this cute photo of Toby and Annie, so the outing must have been a success!

Happy 4th of July!

To our American family and friends - Happy Independence-from-the-scourge-of-the-British Day!

To our British family and friends - Happy we-didn't-want-you-anyway-Day!

To our Harris friends, happy anniversary! I think it is 11 (or maybe 12) for Elisa and Kyle Harris, and 4 (or maybe 5) for Jessica and Avery Harris Telligman.

To my sweet husband, happy 3rd anniversary of the day you made me the happiest woman on earth by asking me to marry you. I couldn't have imagined that day where we'd be today!

Reflections on maternity leave - accomplishments and hilarity

Today is my last day of maternity leave, and it has been a day of mixed emotions. I'm really glad to be going back to work, exercising my brain and engaging in grown-up conversation. I'm also pretty sure that it is easier to be a lawyer than a stay-at-home mom. But it is going to be so hard to be away from her at first. Enough about that, no need to get all weepy when I have four more days until I actually go to the office. (Mom, remind me to put some Kleenex in the car for the drive to work on Tuesday.)

Anyway, I was thinking back on what I thought maternity leave would be like, and the list of things I thought I would do/accomplish while on maternity leave. So here's the list (at least, what I can remember) and the results.

1. Survive. Accomplished? Yes! With flying colors, marriage strong as ever, self-esteem high, and a healthy baby.

2. Lose the baby weight. Accomplished? Somewhat - I have 10 pounds to go, but I think it will be easier to lose them when I am not spending all day next to the refrigerator and a five minute walk to Starbucks, two cupcake shops and three different ice cream establishments.

3. Finish the pregnancy journal. Accomplished? Yes!

4. Organize the basement. Accomplished? Hahahahahah! I was clearly insane and in serious nesting mode when I decide to tackle this project while on leave.

5. Take down the storm windows and clean the windows and storm windows. Accomplished? Only if you consider the three screws I removed on Monday to be any sort of accomplishment.

6. Sleep. Accomplished? Sort of. Annie didn't really want to sleep much for the first six weeks, and she's still getting up at 3:30 or 4 every morning to eat, but I am trying to appreciate getting 5 1/2 to 6 straight hours of sleep every night, and trying not to dwell on the fact that she should be going at least 8-10 straight hours by now.

7. Appreciate how wonderful it is to have a healthy, happy baby. Accomplished? Mostly. The first few weeks are so hard that I spent some of the time wanting my old, pre-pregnant life back, but after I started getting some rest I was able to more fully appreciate how lucky I am. I have a wonderful husband and gorgeous baby - what else could I ask for (other than 6, above)? The good news is that I'll appreciate it all even more when I'm back at work.

Here is what Annie thinks of this list -

Off to take one last walk to the frozen yogurt shop!

Splish Splash

We took Annie to the pool at her Grandma and Grandpa's new neighborhood last weekend for her first dip. It has been so hot and bright that we only stayed a short time, but we had fun splashing her around and she looked so cute in her suit. The pool is amazing and has a very cool two-story slide, though we stayed in the separate baby area. Maybe she can try the slide next summer. :)

Here are Toby and mini-Toby enjoying a dip. Annie was not so sure about the water, since it was much colder than her baths. She did like looking at the sunlight reflecting off the water, though.

Annie and Grandma taking a break in the shade. Annie's hat actually looks cute in this picture, unlike the others. Grandma has been having a lot of fun with Annie this last week, except maybe for the times when Annie is busy screaming (and even then she didn't really mind).

The baby area of the pool has a little spray area, too. The big pool has a very large spray area that we might try out next time.

Looking forward to seeing our little baby turn into a fish over the next few years! She'll be swimming by next summer if Toby has anything to do with it. Beth has been taking Millie to swim lessons already, and we're hoping to get a photo of cute Millie in a bathing suit to post here soon!

Happy Fathers Day!

We had a very fun day celebrating Toby's first Fathers Day! The day started with some group singing early in the morning.....

Followed by dressing Annie in Toby's favorite outfit...

Annie and I made pancakes for breakfast, and we went to Toby's favorite Indian restaurant for lunch. Much lounging followed in the afternoon. Happy Fathers Day, Toby!
PS - If anybody knows how to make a baby smile for the camera, please let me know. :)

Nana and Grumps visit from England

Nana and Grumps (formerly known as Mum and Dad Cooper) visited us for two wonderful weeks recently. We had a fantastic time showing off the baby, traveling to the Smokies for Memorial Day weekend, visiting Carnton, shopping and just hanging out together. The weather was a bit miserably hot, but then again we've never had very good weather when the Coopers have come to visit.

Annie was absolutely fascinated by Grumps and his beard! He would "fly" her overhead, too, which she loved. Sally spent much of the trip behind the camcorder lens, so they should have some great videos.

We took a quick trip back to Carnton, which has some new plants in the garden and a wonderful new visitor's center. The center has huge, air-conditioned bathrooms (which is only important if you want to get married there and don't want to have to rent your own). It also has a permanently installed tent out back, so we're not sure if they still allow receptions in the location where we had ours. Toby, Annie and I took some photos under the orange ossage tree but I don't seem to have them on the computer to share. Here are Nana and Grumps out front of Carnton, surrounded by trees that we don't remember from 2 years ago.

We spent a wonderful Memorial Day weekend in Wears Valley, TN in the Foothills of the Smokey Mountains. It was the same cabin where we spent Christmas with the Thorntons in 2008. The view is gorgeous!

The hot tub was used a bit more this trip...the Cooper men love their hot tubs!

Toby was super excited to see a Copperhead on one of our hikes. I was not so excited, especially since he had Annie strapped to his chest and he kept trying to get closer and closer to the snake.

A fabulous time was had by all! We can't wait to see ALL the Coopers for Christmas this year. It is going to be especially joyous as Beth and James will be getting married while we are there. We absolutely can't wait!

Three Months!

Our sweet baby girl is growing up! Annie is a champion hand-sucker, a super smiler (though you wouldn't know it from these pictures) and she is starting to enjoy looking at books. I think she weighs about 13 pounds, and she just graduated into size 2 diapers and size 3-6 month clothes. I can't believe how big she is! Here are some photos we took tonight:

Here she is looking very concerned that we put her down on the ground outside.

Goofy face!
And Toby's favorite photo - demonstrating Annie's size relative to a beer. Judging by this photo, I would guess that she is approximately two and a half beers long.

I have hope that she will eventually look like a girl, rather than Toby in a dress. One day.... :)
